Food Rescue: A Solution to a Global Humanitarian Crisis

Food Rescue is one of the Greatest Solutions to End Hunger

More than 38% of food produced in the US goes to waste every year. The Community Food Connection partners with Feeding San Diego to rescue high quality, nutritious, surplus food from grocery stores and other food outlets, then gives it to people in need.

Bill Rearick, CEO of The Community Food Connection

“The Community Food Connection rescued 950,000 lbs of food from local grocery stores in 2023.”

Food Rescue: A Solution to a Global Humanitarian Crisis

In this informative video, Patty O’Connor from Feeding San Diego describes how food rescue is a solution to a global humanitarian crisis. Feed people, not landfills!

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Feeding San Diego and The Community Food Connection aligns with the global goals of the United Nations, in particular Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Partnerships (SDG 17).

The vast majority of surplus food becomes food waste and ends up in landfills, incineration, or is left to rot in fields, all of which result in the production of methane gas. Uneaten food generates:

  • 4% of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions

  • 14% of all fresh water use

Food rescue helps reduce this impact to our environment and helps reduce climate change.
